WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest track and field team is set to compete in the 2015 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships Thursday, Feb. 26 through Saturday, Feb. 28. at Rector Field House on the Virginia Tech campus.
"I am excited about this week's ACC Indoor Championships," said head coach John Millar. "We have had a number of individuals establish personal bests over the past few weeks and the ACC is an opportunity for them to see how they match up with many of the best athletes in the country. As a team, our goal is to improve on our point total from last year and an increase in the number of individuals making it into the finals."
The team as a whole has set five indoor school records during the regular season, which include the men's mile by Kyle Graves, the men's 1000m by Simon Holden, the men's pole vault by Michael Cyphers, the women's pole vault set Sydney While, and the men's DMR set by Graves, Holden, Daniel Harrison, and Sebastian Fischbach.
"On the men's side we have several individuals who have the potential to do very well in their individual events," Millar continued. "Both Kyle Graves and Simon Holden are ranked quite high going into the meet and I look forward to see how they rise to the occasion. The men's DMR is disappointed about not qualifying for the NCAA and are hoping to redeem themselves this weekend. Other notables to watch include, Charlie Ionata in the weight throw, John Maurins in the shot put, Alex Krall - heptathlon and Michael Cyphers in the PV."
The men have five teams or athletes that rank in the top-10 in their respective events on the ACC Performance List this season. Graves leads the way ranking second in the mile this season.
"For the women, Sydney White and Nyki Caldwell have both demonstrated that they are capable of scoring well in this meet," said Millar. "We look for additional contributions from Amy Collins - pentathlon, Samantha Jones and Cate Allen in the distance events and our young throws contingent."
Leading the way for the women, Caldwell and White each rank fourth on the ACC Performance List in the high jump and pole vault respectively.
The championships will begin on Thursday at 10 a.m. with the women's pentathlon, followed by the men's heptathlon at 10:45 a.m.
