CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to eighth-ranked Virginia on Sunday at the Boar's Head Tennis Center.
The Demon Deacons drop to 12-9 on the season and 2-7 in Atlantic Coast Conference play with the loss. The Cavaliers improved to 13-4 overall and 6-2 in ACC action. The victory snapped a two-match losing streak for the Cavaliers. Due to cold weather in Charlottesville, the match was moved from Snyder Tennis Center to the indoor Boar's Head Tennis Center.
Virginia started hot in doubles with wins on court Nos. 1 and 3. On No. 1, Danielle Collins and Skylar Morton topped Andrea Retolaza Andrade and Xue Zhang 8-2 while Julia Elbaba and Cassie Mercer beat Karen Forman and Courtney Meredith on No. 3. The No. 2 doubles pairing of Luisa Fernandez and Kimmy Guerin battled against Stephanie Nauta and Maci Epstein, but the match was abandoned with Virginia taking the doubles point.
As the match turned to singles, the Cavaliers jumped out to early leads on each court but No. 6, as Retolaza Andrade kept things tight with Marie Faure before losing the first set 7-6 (3). She ultimately fell 7-6, 6-1 to Faure.
Though the Cavaliers took solid first-set leads on court Nos. 1-5, Zhang, Meredith and Forman each kept their second sets tight, but Virginia proved to be too strong and came away with victories on each court.
The Demon Deacons will return home to begin a four-match homestand on Friday, April 3, at 12 noon against Notre Dame at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
