WINSTON-SALEM - Though three singles matches went three sets, the Wake Forest women's tennis team dropped a competitive 7-0 decision Friday at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex to No. 40 Notre Dame in Atlantic Coast Conference action.
The loss drops the Demon Deacons to 12-10 overall and 2-8 in ACC play. Notre Dame improves to 13-6 on the season with a 7-3 mark on conference play. The 7-0 margin marks the 12th match in a row for the Demon Deacons that has finished with a final score of 7-0 or 6-1.
Even though the Irish came away with the sweep, Kimmy Guerin on court No. 1, Samantha Asch on No. 3 and Courtney Meredith on No. 6 each took their matches to third sets.
After winning the first set 6-4, Guerin lost the second set 6-2 and battled Quinn Gleason in the third set before ultimately falling 6-4 at No. 1. On No. 3, Asch dropped the first set 6-4 but fought back to take the second set 6-4 to force the third set. In the final frame, she fell 7-5 to Julie Vrabel. On No. 6, Meredith, like Guerin, won the first set before falling in a second-set tiebreaker as Jane Fennelly forced a third set tiebreaker. Fennelly then took the match with a 10-7 win in the tiebreaker.

The match started out with the Irish taking the doubles point with wins on Nos. 1 and 3. Wake Forest's only win in doubles came in an 8-2 victory on No. 2 by Guerin and Gardiner over Vrabel and Closs. At No. 1 doubles, the 20th-ranked duo of Gleason and Robinson topped Zhang and Andrea Retolaza Andrade 8-3, and the pairing of Miller and Fennelly topped Fernandez and Asch on No. 3, 8-3.
The Demon Deacons return to action on Sunday, April 5, when they take on Boston College. First serve between the Deacs and Eagles is set for 12 p.m.
