PITTSBURGH - Pitt took advantage of two big hits and limited Wake Forest's bats en route to a series-clinching 8-4 win at Cost Field on Sunday afternoon.
A three-run triple by Frank Maldonado and three-run homer by Boo Vazquez accounted for six of Pitt's (14-20, 6-12 ACC) eight runs.
Wake Forest (22-16, 9-9 ACC) out-hit the Panthers 8-7, but were limited to just 1-of-12 with runners in scoring position and 3-of-21 with runners on base. Pitt was 3-for-7 with runners in scoring position, 4-for-8 with runners on.
Pitt came out of the gate with four first-inning runs to take an early advantage.
After an RBI fielder's choice from Drew Freedman, Nate Mondou knocked in a pair when the bases were loaded with a two-run single, cutting the margin to 4-3.
The Panthers answered right back, with Vazquez's three-run blast in the fifth to push the margin to 7-3.
Mondou tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the seventh, but a three-base error allowed Pitt to re-extend its lead to four in the eighth.
Gavin Sheets got on base on all four of his plate appearances, finishing 2-for-2 with a double and two walks.
Will Craig (1-2) took the loss on the mound after allowing the four first-inning runs. He settled in to retire the last 11 batters he faced after the three-run triple.
For Pitt, Marc Berube (1-4) earned the win by allowing four runs (two earned) in 6.1 innings. Josh Mitchell and Hobie Harris combined to toss 2.2 scoreless innings in relief.
Wake Forest has a midweek home-and-home against Davidson. The Wildcats travel to Winston-Salem on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., before the Deacons make the return trip Wednesday at 6 p.m.
