CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshman Will Zalatoris fired a 2-under 70 to lead Wake Forest in the opening round of the NCAA Regional at the UNC Finley Golf Course. The Demon Deacons are in 10th place with two rounds to play.

"We came out and played scare and cautious and you can't do that," said head coach Jerry Haas. "At the end of the day, Will Zalatoris shot a nice round and he feels like he could have shot a better one but we need more than one guy to do that. We can't come out tomorrow and play like this. Sure, we started on the back and it is a little harder but we should have been prepared for that. We can't get behind and try to come back like this. We have to get in there and play. They need to dig down deep and see what they are made of. There is still a lot of golf to play."

Charlotte fired a 13-under 275 to lead the field. Florida, Florida State, Clemson and North Carolina round out the top five. Wake Forest is currently in 10th place, eight strokes out of the fifth spot. The top five schools will advance to the NCAA UNC's William Register is the individual leader at 6-under.

Zalatoris was even at the turn and bogeyed hole on to find himself at 1-over with eight holes to play. He would birdie three of the final eight holes to finish the day with a 2-under 70. He is tied for 13th.

Freshman Paul McBride also made an impressive comeback on the back nine. He was 3-over at the turn and also birdied three of the final eight holes to turn in a 1-over 73.

Sophomore Woody Woodward carded a round of 75 and freshman Tanner Owen posted a 76. Junior Davis Womble rounded out the group with a 77.

The Demon Deacons look to make up ground during Friday's second round. Wake Forest is paired with McNeese State and Miami (Ohio). The groups will tee off from hole 10 beginning at 8:55 a.m.
