TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Senior Nyki Caldwell made history on Saturday becoming the ACC Women's High Jump Champion as the Wake Forest track and field teams wrapped up competition at the 2015 ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Mike Long Track.
Caldwell earned All-ACC First team honors, earning one of the Wake Forest's eight total All-ACC selections. Five women earned honors with Jessie Merckle being the only other woman to earn First Team honors. Three Deacons earned honors on the men's side with John Maurins claiming the only First Team selection from the men's side.
A senior out of Dexter, Michigan, Caldwell made history on Saturday becoming the first women in Wake Forest history to win both an indoor and outdoor ACC championship in a field event. Caldwell also became the first Demon Deacon to win both an indoor and outdoor championship in the same event, during the same season since Michelle Sikes in 2007. Caldwell won the women's indoor high jump title at the 2015 ACC Indoor Championships earlier this year. In 2007, Sikes won the ACC 5,000m championships for indoor and outdoor, while also winning the 10,000m championship in outdoor.
Caldwell claimed her second ACC Championship of the 2015 season winning the outdoor high jump championship and tying an outdoor career-best mark of 1.78m (5-10). Although Caldwell and Dakota Dailey Harris of the Miami Hurricanes had the same mark of 1.78m, Caldwell took gold winning on jump progressions.
In addition to Caldwell, Emily Campbell earned All-ACC Second Team honors for the first time in her career in the women's discus. Her new personal best distance of 47.37m (155-5) earned her a sixth place finish to earn the Deacons' first all-conference honor of the day.
Samantha Jones earned the women's third All-ACC honor for the day finishing fourth in the 5,000m. She finished with a solid time of 16:26.41 to earn her first-career All-ACC Second Team honor for the event.
Others on the women's side who had top-10 finishes include Kathryn Lazarchick with a ninth place finish in the 1,500m, and Cate Allen who finished 10th in the 5,000m.
Simon Holden had a tough day competing in two finals in the men's 800m and 1,500m, however, he earned All-ACC Second Team honors in the 800m finishing in fifth place. It was his first-career All-ACC honor. In the 1,500m, Holden crossed the finish line in ninth place.
In addition on the men's side, John Maurins set a new personal record distance in the discus of 46.70m (153-2). Sebastian Fischbach finished seventh in the 1,500m. He had set a person best time yesterday of 3.44.86 to qualify for the finals. Michael Cyphers finished eighth in the pole vault to earn another top-10 finish for the Deacons.
In the final team standings for the ACC Championships, Wake Forest finished 12th on the women's side and 14th for the men.
Following the ACC Championships, the NCAA First Round begins March 28. The Demon Deacons will wait for all conference championships to end before finding out who will qualify for the NCAA Championships.
