CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Wake Forest finished 10th in the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional at UNC Finley Golf Course to conclude the 2014-15 season. The top three finishers for the Demon Deacons were all freshmen.
Wake Forest turned in rounds of 294-288-292 to finish 10th at the Chapel Hill Regional. Charlotte took home the Regional Championship while Stanford, Florida State, Florida and Clemson all earned a trip to the NCAA Championship in Bradenton, Fla.
The No. 1 player in the country, Stanford's Maverick McNealy, won the individual title at 9-under. Western Carolina's J.T. Poston won the individual spot in a two-hole playoff to qualify for NCAA Championships over Dawson Armstrong of Lipscomb.
"We have struggled at regionals lately but I am hopeful this isn't a trend," said head coach Jerry Haas. "We had a good team meeting after today's round and we know we have to start better and become a stronger mental team. We started on the backside in the first round and ended up staying there all weekend. If you look at the teams that advanced, they started on the front side. We had a very young lineup with three freshmen and one sophomore. That group, along with next year's newcomers, will be in a great position to go on a postseason run."
Freshman Will Zalatoris finished 1-over for the weekend after a 4-over 76 in Saturday's final round. He tied for 23rd in the individual standings. This was the first tournament of the season that the ACC Freshman of the Year finished over par.
Freshman Tanner Owen carded the Deacons' lowest final round with a 1-under 71. Owen was as low as 3-under before a double bogey on hole seven. He ended the tournament at 2-over and tied for 32nd.
Freshman Paul McBride was even par in his final round to end up 4-over for the weekend. He ended up tied for 41st.
Sophomore Woody Woodward carded a 1-over 73 on Saturday after an impressive finish. He was 4-over with five holes to play and birded three of the final five holes. He finished the regional at 5-pver. Junior Davis Womble ended up 12-over to round out the scores for Wake Forest.
