WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest men's golf earned a bid to the NCAA Championship on Monday morning and will open the tournament next weekend, May 14-16, as the No. 5-seed in the Chapel Hill Regional at Finley Golf Course.
The top five teams and the best individual performer that does not play for one of the top five teams through the 54-hole regional will earn a spot in the NCAA Championship Final, which is set for May 29-June 3 at Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida.
Florida State, the top-ranked team in the nation, is the No. 1-seed in the regional followed by Stanford. North Carolina earned the No. 3-seed while Kennesaw State picked up the No. 4-seed before Wake Forest at No. 5. Clemson, the fourth Atlantic Coast Conference team in the regional, follows the Deacs with Florida, Georgia Regents, Charlotte and McNeese State rounding out the top-10 seeds in the regional.
With the Chapel Hill draw, it marks the second year in a row Wake Forest will stay in the state of North Carolina for the Regionals after going to NC State last year at the Lonnie Poole Golf Club. This season will mark the first time the Deacs will play at Finley Golf Course in the NCAA Championship.
Wake Forest has advanced past the regional round 14 times since the tournament changed to regional format in 1989. The Deacs have won their respective regional three times, all of which have come since 2005. Last time Wake Forest won the regional was in 2008 at the OSU Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio. Last season, Wake Forest posted its best team finish in a regional since advancing to the finals in 2009 by placing seventh in shooting 17-over 869.
Last year Cyrus Stewart advanced out of the regional as an individual. He tied for sixth shooting 4-under 209 to advance to the finals.
As a conference, the ACC had a record-breaking 10 schools selected to this year's NCAA Championship. It is also the most of any conference in the country.
