NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Sierra Sims fired a 3-under 69 to lead Wake Forest in the second round of the NCAA Notre Dame Regional. The Demon Deacons are in third place with 18 holes to play for a trip to the NCAA Championship.

The Demon Deacons didn't let a three-hour lightning delay keep them from a strong finish. The team was forced indoors with Sierra Sims on the 18th fairway, Allison Emrey on the 18th tee and Marissa Dodd back on 17. After more than three hours off the course the team went back out and two of the three birdied the final hole. The two birdies dropped Wake Forest to 4-over for the day and secured third place in the standings.

"The team played very well today," said head coach Dianne Dailey. "Everyone faced challenges throughout the round but showed a lot of grit and toughness, especially after the long weather delay. Their strong finishes after the delay really put us in a good position for tomorrow. We are looking forward to tomorrow."

Duke leads the regional at 1-over while Purdue moved up seven spots to take second place at 6-over. Wake Forest is 9-over through 36 holes with a one-stroke lead over fourth-place Arizona. UC Davis (13-over) and Tulane (17-over) are the final two teams currently in the top six that qualify for NCAA Championships, May 22-27 in Bradenton, Fla.

Sierra Sims and Dodd are both tied for fifth along with Purdue's August Kim. Sims tied for the lowest round of the day with a 3-under 69. She finished the day with a birdie on 15 and an eagle on the par-5 17. She climbed 20 spots in the individual standings and is 1-under heading in to Sunday's final round.

Dodd followed her opening round 70 with a 73 on Friday. Dodd birdied 16 before heading inside for the three-hour lightning delay. She came back out and birdied 18 to finish the day with a 1-over 73. She is 1-under through 36 holes.

Emrey also came back out from the weather delay and birdied the final hole of the day. She carded a 2-over 74 on Friday to bring her two day score to 1-over. She is tied for 10th with four other golfers.

Erica Herr showed a two-stroke improvement from the opening round with a 76 on Friday. She is 10-over after two rounds. Mariana Sims shot an 82 on Friday.

Wake Forest is attempting to qualify for its first NCAA Championship since 2011. That year the Demon Deacons were also at Notre Dame for the regional.

The Deacs will be paired with Duke and Purdue for Saturday's final round. The first groups will tee off at 9:39 a.m.
