WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - Former Wake Forest men's tennis player Noah Rubin has been named to the 2015 USTA Collegiate National Team, the organization announced Tuesday. Rubin is one of three men's players on the team while four women's athletes were named on the women's side.
The other two men's players are Mackenzie McDonald, a rising junior at UCLA, and Ryan Shane, a rising senior at Virginia. Rubin is the only player of the group to have already indicated he is turning pro this year.
The USTA Collegiate National Team is a high-level training program designed to help America's premier college players assimilate to professional tennis in a team-oriented atmosphere. Three coaches - Oklahoma associate head coach Bo Hodge, Georgia Tech assistant coach Derek Schwandt and Christian Groh, the personal coach of former world No. 2 Tommy Haas - will assist the Collegiate National Team players as they play in professional tournaments on the USTA Pro Circuit this summer.
"It is of vital importance that college tennis remains a strong part of the professional tennis player pathway," said USTA Player Development General Manager Martin Blackman. "Therefore, USTA Player Development will continue to provide America's top college players with the resources to help them make the transition from college to successful pro careers."
This year's team was open to rising freshmen through rising seniors who met at least one of the required criteria. The criteria included being the NCAA singles champion, being the highest-ranked American in the ITA final singles rankings, earning ITA Rookie of the Year honors, being the ITA All-American singles champion or USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships singles champion, or to have a pro ranking inside the Top 600 for men and Top 400 for women.
"These players have excelled in college tennis and USTA Player Development is proud to support them not only in their quests to be successful professionals, but with the belief that they will be future leaders of American tennis," said Stephen Amritraj, USTA National Coach, Collegiate Tennis.
In his lone season at Wake Forest in 2015, Rubin posted a 26-4 singles record while going 18-4 against nationally-ranked opponents on the way to earning ACC Player and Freshman of the Year honors with ITA Rookie of the Year honors. Rubin also posted a victory over Shane this season, beating the Cavalier in straight sets in the ACC Championship finals before falling to Shane in the finals of the NCAA Singles Championship.
