Panther Invitational Tournament Central
Deacs to Close Nonconference Road Slate
Wake Forest will compete in its final nonconference road tournament of the 2015 season this weekend when it heads to the Panther Invitational, hosted by High Point University.
Throughout the weekend, Wake Forest will take on Marshall, Davidson and High Point inside High Point's Millis Center.
Last Time Out
The Deacs took home the Elon Phoenix Classic trophy last weekend by going 3-0 against NC Central, Charleston Southern and Elon.
Wake Forest topped NC Central 3-2 on Friday afternoon before sweeping Charleston Southern on Saturday morning. In the final match against Elon, Wake Forest came away with a 3-1 victory over the host-Phoenix.
Freshman Katie Moore was named the tournament's MVP while Caroline Wolf and Hanna Lee were named to the all-tournament team.
Road Warriors
Wake Forest is on the tail end of a three-tournament, nine-match stretch to open the 2015 season.
Though the Deacs have not played at home yet, Wake Forest has not left the state of North Carolina since the opening weekend in the Rambler Challenge. The Demon Deacons are not scheduled to leave North Carolina again until they travel to Louisville next month on Oct. 16.
Scouting the Competition
Friday's match against Marshall will be the fifth all-time meeting between the two programs. The Deacs hold a 3-1 record against the Herd and have won each of the last three contests. The most recent contest came in 2004, a 3-1 win for the Demon Deacons.
The Deacs will take on Davidson for the eighth time since 1996 on Saturday afternoon with Wake Forest looking to improve on its 6-1 mark against the Wildcats. Last season, Wake Forest topped Davidson 3-1 at home on Sept. 5.
In the final match of the tournament, the Deacs are set to renew their long-running series against High Point. Wake Forest holds a 22-17 mark all-time against HPU dating back to 1971 and are 7-1 going back to 1981, but the Demon Deacons fell 3-2 in the last meeting on Aug. 28, 2012, in High Point.
Next Up
After nine matches to start the season on the road, Wake Forest will host the Deacon Classic next weekend from Sept. 18-19.
During the tournament, Wake Forest will host Georgia, Hofstra and VCU. The Deacs will open the tournament at 7 p.m. Friday against Georgia before taking on defending CAA Tournament-champion Hofstra and VCU on Saturday at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
