CARY, N.C. -- Two players on the Wake Forest men's tennis team earned spots in qualifying of the Cary Challenger this weekend and completed the first two rounds of the draw on Sunday at the Cary Tennis Center.
Keivon Tabrizi, who is ranked No. 1,524 in the ATP rankings, earned the No. 6-seed in the qualifying bracket and a first-round bye. In his second-round matchup against Georgyi Malyshev of Russia, Tabrizi 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 to advance to Monday's third round of qualifying and will take on No. 3-seed Damon Gooch of South Africa. Gooch topped wild card Robert Kelly of the United States by the score of 6-3, 6-1 in the second round after winning a first-round bye like Tabrizi.
The other Demon Deacon in the tournament is Jon Ho. He won his first-round matchup over Shota Meparidze of Georgia in convincing fashion, 6-1, 6-0. In his second round matchup against American Cameron Silverman, the No. 2-seed in qualifying, Ho fell behind by a set but came back to win 5-7, 7-6 (1), 6-3. Next up for Ho in the third round is North Carolina junior Ronnie Schneider.
The Deacon duo is set to return to action on Monday afternoon. Tabrizi's match against Gooch is set for noon on Court 16 while Ho will take on Schneider in the second match of the afternoon on Grandstand. Should Tabrizi or Ho win on Monday, they would have won their way into the main draw of the tournament and play first-round matches on Tuesday.
