WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest women's soccer team began ACC play with a 3-0 victory over Miami Friday night at Spry Stadium. The Demon Deacons (4-2-2, 1-0 ACC) recorded a conference-opening win for the sixth consecutive season, while the Hurricanes (3-5, 0-1 ACC) saw their three-game win streak snapped.
Sarah Medina and Bayley Feist scored for the Demon Deacons, who also benefitted from a Miami own goal, to produce their first multi-goal scoring game since the season-opening 4-0 victory over Georgia.
Wake Forest controlled the early part of the game and nearly took the lead in the opening minutes as two different chances from corner kicks resulted in Miami defenders making a save on the goal line. The Deacons took advantage of their next chance as Medina scored her third goal of the season in the ninth minute of play. Kate Ravenna's long pass was flicked-on by Kendall Fischlein onto the run of Medina, who buried the chance from 12 yards out. The remainder of the first half saw action at both ends of the field and the Hurricanes nearly drew even in the 43rd minute when Jasmine Paterson's long-range shot rang off the post. The Demon Deacons took the 1-0 lead into halftime, outshooting Miami 8-6 before the break.
Wake Forest held that one-goal advantage until it broke open the game with a pair of goals midway through the second half. In the 70th minute, a cross from Kahla Seymour was deflected to the far post by Kendal Robino. The ball came right to Feist, who tapped in her first career goal. A Seymour cross created the third goal of the evening four minutes later. A Miami defender tried to clear the cross for a corner kick, but instead sent the ball into the net for an own goal.
Wake Forest outshot Miami 15-12 on the evening, while the Hurricanes held a 7-5 corner kick edge. Nonie Frishette played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Deacons for the first time this season, making six saves to post her first career shutout. Miami keeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce made six saves at the other.
The Demon Deacons will conclude their four-game homestand on Sunday as it hosts UNC Wilmington. Game time at Spry Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
