WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest women's soccer team peppered the UNCW net with shots, but the Seahawks held off the Demon Deacons, 2-1, at Spry Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Wake Forest (4-3-2) out-shot UNCW 19-12, including 11-3 in the second half, but the Seahawks (7-3) were able to increase their winning streak to six games, thanks in large part to Carolyn Huddy's eight saves.
Sarah Medina scored her fourth goal of the season to even the score at 1-1 early in the second half off a long through ball from Kendal Robino.
A pair of Seahawks scored their first goals of the season, though, to aid their winning effort. Off a Lindsey Byrne corner, Moa Jarl headed it to an open Morgan Leyble who finished inside the left post in the 11th minute.
Serenity Waters scored the game-winner in the 75th minute. Savannah Andrews sent a cross into the box, and Waters finished it upper-90 to make the score 2-1.
The Deacs had several chances for the equalizer in the final 15 minutes. First, Sarah Teegarden attempted a one-timer from point-blank range, but the shot deflected off the post in the 79th minute.
Wake Forest's best opportunity came in the 86th minute. A long ball found Reci Smith behind the defense. After beating a defender, Smith's shot attempt from 10 yards out was stopped by Huddy 1v1.
The Deacs totaled nine shots on goal, including six in the second half, but only one found the back of the net. Teegarden and Kahla Seymour led Wake Forest with four shots apiece.
Nonie Frishette made four saves in the losing effort, falling to 1-1-1.
Wake Forest is back in action Thursday, traveling to Pittsburgh for a 7 p.m. game on ESPN3.
