WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest volleyball team staved off a Virginia comeback effort to earn a 3-2 (25-19, 25-23, 24-26, 18-25, 15-11) victory at Reynolds Gymnasium Saturday night. The Demon Deacons moved to 9-5 on the season with a 1-1 record in ACC action.
The triumph was the Deacons' first over the Cavaliers since 2011.
In the first set, Virginia wound up with a 16-12 advantage, but Wake Forest staged a furious 13-2 run to take a 1-0 overall lead. Sam Boesch racked up six kills on a .750 hitting percentage.
In similar fashion to the opening set, Virginia again staked itself to a 16-12 second-set lead only to see the Demon Deacons surge for an 11-4 run that paved the way for a 25-23 win and a 2-0 overall edge.
Kylie Long took charge with eight kills on a .500 hitting percentage to guide her team to a two-set lead going into the intermission.
The Cavaliers fought back in a back-and-forth third set that featured 15 ties and six lead changes. The Deacs had a match-point opportunity with a 24-23 lead, but Virginia reeled off three-consecutive points to win, 26-24.
Wake Forest found itself in an 8-1 hole to begin the fourth set, but came all the way back to grab a 16-15 lead. The Cavaliers made the home team's lead short-lived, however, going on a 10-3 run to force a decisive fifth set.
In search of their third five-set win of the season, the Deacs never trailed in the final set, going up 6-2 and never looking back for a 15-11 victory. Five of Wake Forest's 15 points came off Matalee Reed kills.
Reed finished the night with a match-best 20 kills on a .516 hitting percentage, while Long came away with 19 kills of her own. Hanna Lee had a superb night from the service line with six aces and Sophia Dodd posted 37 assists.
Defensively, Katie Moore registered six blocks and Caroline Wolf put up 17 digs.
Next week, Wake Forest picks up play with road matches at N.C. State Friday and North Carolina Saturday. The Deacons wrap up a string of 15-straight matches in the state of North Carolina the following week with home contests against Miami and Florida State.
