WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Despite a strong defensive performance, Wake Forest women's soccer dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 2-ranked North Carolina at Spry Stadium on a rainy Sunday evening.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lindsay Preston matched her career-high with nine saves, including six in the the second half. The Tar Heels (10-0-1, 3-0-0 ACC) made a 17th-minute goal score stand to remain unbeaten.
Summer Green's first shot from eight yards was saved, but she followed her own rebound and tapped it into the empty net to make the score 1-0.
Wake Forest's (4-5-2, 1-2-0 ACC) best chance came in the 31st minute. Maddie Huster got behind the UNC defense and keeper and appeared poised to tap in a goal. As Huster made her last dribble, a Tar Heel defender raced in and shouldered her away to prevent the score.
Preston kept North Carolina off the board in the second half, making three big saves, including one diving effort and another jumping stop, in the final 20 minutes as the Tar Heels searched for an insurance goal.
The Demon Deacons had an opportunity to tie the game in the final minute, but Sarah Teegarden's shot from 30 yards sailed high.
UNC out-shot the Demon Deacons by a 20-4 margin. Bryane Heaberlin and Lindsey Harris combined for the shutout for the Tar Heels, with Heaberlin claiming the win to improve to 7-0.
Wake Forest plays its second consecutive top-10 team on Friday at 7:30 p.m., traveling to Clemson for another ACC contest.
