MELBOURNE, Australia — Former Wake Forest men's tennis player Noah Rubin picked up his first-ever victory at a Grand Slam Tournament on Monday, posting a first-round upset win over 17th-seeded Benoit Paire at the Australian Open.
All three sets were decided in tiebreakers as Rubin outlasted Paire to win a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5) decision.
Ranked No. 328 in the world, Rubin won the USTA Pro Circuit Australian Open Wild Card Challenge in November to secure his spot in the tournament.
This is Rubin's second Grand Slam appearance. Previously, he earned a wild card into the 2014 US Open as the USTA Boys 18s Singles champion. Prior to playing at Wake Forest, Rubin also won the 2014 Wimbledon junior title.
As a Demon Deacon last season, Rubin went 26-4 in singles in a campaign that ended in the NCAA Singles Championship final. Earning All-American accolades, the native of New York, N.Y. helped lead the Deacs to their third Sweet 16 appearance.
Rubin will take on Pierre-Hugues Herbert of France in the second round.
