TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Wake Forest played its first ranked opponent of the season, but fell to No. 14 Florida State 17-6 on Saturday at Doak Campbell Stadium. The Demon Deacon defense forced four Seminole turnovers, but couldn't take advantage on the scoreboard, falling to 5-2 overall (2-2 ACC). Florida State improved to 5-2 overall (2-2 ACC).
For the second straight week, Marquel Lee led the Demon Deacon defense, accumulating nine tackles, including 2.5 tackles-for-loss and one sack, while forcing two fumbles.
Wake Forest was led offensively by Cortez Lewis, who had six catches for 109 yards, posting his first-career 100-yard game.
Florida State took the early 3-0 lead on a field goal on the final play of the first quarter. Wake Forest answered early in the second quarter on Mike Weaver's first field goal of the afternoon. The Seminoles took advantage of a poor snap on a Demon Deacon punt, their third turnover of the opening half, to set up a short touchdown drive, capped by a 2-yard rush by quarterback Deondre Francois. Florida State took that 10-3 advantage into halftime.
On the opening drive of the second half, Lee hit FSU running back Dalvin Cook to force a fumble recovered by Ryan Janvion. Wake Forest used the short field to set up Weaver's second field goal of the afternoon to cut the Noles' lead to 10-6.
Florida State extended the advantage to 17-6 midway through the third quarter on Francois' 11-yard touchdown pass to Auden Tate.
In the fourth quarter, Lee's second forced fumble of the day on a strip-sack of Francois was recovered by Josh Banks and returned 39 yards deep into FSU territory. That turnover set-up a field goal attempt by Weaver that hit the left upright, keeping the deficit at 17-6.
