DEACS OPEN SEASON AGAINST CROSS-TOWN FOE
• Wake Forest tips-off the 2016-17 season by hosting Piedmont International in an exhibition game at the LJVM Coliseum
• Piedmont International, located in Winston-Salem, is a member of National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Division II
• The Bruins are led by first-year head coach Josh Howard, who was the 2003 ACC Player of the Year at Wake Forest before being a first-round NBA selection
• The last time the Demon Deacons played a team coached by a Wake Forest alumnus was a matchup with Iowa, led by Fran McCaffery, in the 2010 ACC/Big Ten Challenge
MEET THE DEACS
• The 2016-17 roster features a mix of veterans and newcomers
• Ten returning letterwinners, including three starters (Bryant Crawford, Dinos Mitoglou and Mitchell Wilbekin) return from last year's squad
• The newcomers include four freshmen (Brandon Childress, Sam Japhet-Mathias, Donovan Mitchell and Rich Washington)
• Two transfers will also take the floor this season: sophomore Keyshawn Woods (who sat out last year due to NCAA rules after playing in 2014-15 at Charlotte) and graduate student Austin Arians (who played his undergraduate career at Milwaukee)
CHALLENGING SCHEDULE
• The Demon Deacons will once again play one of the nation's toughest schedules in 2016-17
• Of the 30 regular season games, seven are against teams ranked in the preseason AP and Coaches polls, with nine others against teams receiving votes in the preseason polls
• The Deacs could play even more ranked teams at the Charleston Classic, including a potential semifinal against reigning NCAA Champion Villanova
UP NEXT
• The Demon Deacons will open the regular season on Nov. 11 as they host Radford
• Game time is 7:30 p.m. and the contest will be available on ACC Network Extra, available on the WatchESPN app
• The game is the nightcap of a Wake Forest basketball season-opening doubleheader, as the Demon Deacon women tip-off their season at 4 p.m. against Navy
• The game is also the fourth annual Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Classic, as the Deacons will honor active duty and retired military personnel at the game, including offering free tickets to veterans and their families.
