WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest fell to Notre Dame in three sets on Friday at the Summit School.
Kylie Long recorded a career-high 19 digs in the affair, surpassing her previous mark of 17 set against Elon on Sept. 20, 2014. Long also recorded five kills in the match. She is now three kills away from taking the No. 8 spot in program history.
Notre Dame (19-6) took an early 4-0 lead in the first set. After the teams traded points, Wake Forest (10-3) went on a three-point run to pull within one, 10-9. However, Notre Dame stayed strong and extended its advantage to 16-10, forcing a Wake Forest time out. After the break, the Deacs went on a 5-0 reign and Caitlyn Della knocked back-to-back kills to put Notre Dame into a timeout. The Deacs continued their run and managed to tie the set 17-all. The remainder of the set was a battle with four lead changes and four ties but it was the Fighting Irish who took the first set, 25-22.
The second set got off to an even start with each team going point-for-point. A combination of a Notre Dame kill and a Wake Forest attack error forced the Deacs into a time out down 7-5. The Deacs continued to fight after the stoppage and took a 10-9 lead thanks to a trio of kills from Caroline Rassenfoss, Kylie Long, and Caitlyn Della. After an Irish time out, the Deacs sustained their advantage and gained a four-point lead on Notre Dame, forcing the Irish to burn their second time out. The remainder of the set consisted of runs and deficits with neither team ahead by more than two until Notre Dame sealed the set, 25-22.
The third set reflected the end of the second complete with runs and deficits as the teams jumped off to an even start. Tied at three points each, Wake Forest went on a three-point run thanks to an ace from Hanna Lee and a kill from Della forcing a Notre Dame timeout. After the break, the teams continued pacing each other until kills from Lee and Rassenfoss gave the Deacs a 16-12 lead. The Deacs extended their advantage to 22-18 but the Irish refused to back down. The teams traded points but it was Notre Dame that would walk away with a 26-24 set victory and a 3-0 match win.
Hanna Lee led the Deacs offensively with seven kills on 14 attacks for a .429 attack percentage. Caroline Rassenfoss recorded eight kills on 27 attacks while Long and Katie Moore each recorded five kills.
The Demon Deacons return to action Sunday, Nov. 6 against Louisville. The match is set for 1 p.m. at the Summit School.
