NEW YORK – Wake Forest men's soccer senior captains Jacori Hayes and Alec Ferrell were both selected to participate in the adidas MLS Player Combine in Los Angeles from Jan. 8-12, 2017. The list of players selected was announced Wednesday by Major League Soccer.
All players invited to the combine will be eligible for selection in the 2017 SuperDraft, which will take place at 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 13, at the LA Convention Center in conjunction with the NSCAA Convention.
A committee of MLS coaches and NCAA Division I coaches from every conference selected the invitees, all of whom completed their college eligibility this season. Further invitees including Generation adidas signees, non-collegiate players and additional college seniors will be announced in the coming weeks.
The two players invited this year follow Michael Gamble's invitation prior to the 2016 SuperDraft. At this year's combine, players will showcase their talents in front of representatives from all 22 MLS clubs.
Hayes started all 25 games Wake Forest played in this season, leading the team with eight goals and 19 points while helping the Demon Deacons to the ACC Tournament championship, No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament and a national runner-up finish. Ferrell, though missing the first five games of the season and four of the five NCAA Tournament games, finished the season with eight shutouts in 16 games and posted a 12-1-3 record with a 0.54 goals against average. Both players were named First Team NSCAA All-Americans and First Team All-ACC honorees.
Hayes and Ferrell helped Wake Forest post a 19-3-3 record this season – the most wins in a season since winning 21 games in 2008 – and posted 14 shutouts on the way to reaching the national championship game. In the College Cup final, the Demon Deacons battled Stanford through 110 scoreless minutes before falling 5-4 in penalty kicks.
