Deacs Sweep Singles to Defeat William & Mary, 6-1

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – After dropping the doubles competition, the 64th-ranked Wake Forest women's tennis team stormed back in singles to defeat No. 42 William & Mary, 6-1, at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center in Williamsburg, Va. on Sunday. The Demon Deacons improved the 7-0 on the season, matching their best start to a season in program history.
The 2014 Deacons also got off to a 7-0 start to break the 1996 squad's program record of six-straight wins to open a season. Sunday's victory was their second on the road against a ranked opponent.
The Tribe got out to a 1-0 lead by claiming Nos. 1 and 2 doubles. The 51st-ranked tandem of Luisa Fernandez and Andrea Retolaza Andrade opened the competition with a 6-2 triumph at No. 3 before the hosts rallied to take the first point of the dual match.
The tide turned in singles, however, when Samantha Asch won a quick, 6-1, 6-1 match against Maria Groener. Emma Davis then gave the Deacs the lead and improved to 6-1 on the spring by downing Lauren Goodman, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2.
Fernandez extended the visitors' lead at No. 6 when she dispatched Cecily Wuenscher in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. To clinch the team victory, Kimmy Guerin fought off a second-set loss to prevail versus No. 91-ranked Elizaveta Nemchinov, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
To cap the singles sweep, Anna Ulyashchenko closed out Marie Faure in three sets at No. 3 and fellow freshman Joanna Zalewski edged Julia Casselbury at No. 4 in a close, 10-8 match tiebreaker.
Guerin, Zalewski and Asch remained unbeaten on the season in singles with their victories on Sunday. All three are now 7-0 on the spring.
The Deacs are 20-16 all-time against William & Mary, including an 11-8 mark in Williamsburg. They now have 20 all-time wins against seven different schools—they have also beaten NC State, Maryland, Furman, Virginia Tech, Virginia and Georgia Tech 20 or more times.
Wake Forest will continue a stretch of five-consecutive matches on the road with a trip to the Great Lakes State next Saturday. The Demon Deacons will take on both Michigan State and Eastern Michigan.
