WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest used an eight run first inning to cruise to a 12-0 victory over Duke on Friday Night at David F. Couch Ballpark
The 12-run margin of victory was the largest for the Demon Deacons (15-9, 3-4 ACC) in an ACC game since they beat Maryland on May 21, 2010. It is also the team's second shutout victory of the season and the first in ACC play.
Stuart Fairchild went 4-for-5 with a homer and two doubles, scoring four runs. Jonathan Pryor, Joey Rodriguez, Nate Mondou, Kevin Conway and Johnny Aiello added two hits apiece.
On the mound, Parker Dunshee allowed four hits in 6.0 shutout innings, striking out four, to earn the win and improve to 4-2.
The Deacons knocked Duke (11-13, 1-6 ACC) ace Bailey Clark (2-3) out of the game in the first inning, sending 14 men to the plate in the eight-run frame.
The scoring began when Will Craig, making just his second start in the last two weeks, slashed a double down the left field line to bring home a pair. Two batters later, Fairchild delivered two more on an opposite field home run to make it 5-0. The Deacs loaded the bases again before a passed ball and a Jonathan Pryor RBI groundout brought home two more runs.
After Joey Rodriguez's second single of the inning, Wake Forest had built an 8-0 lead and chased Clark from the game.
After the huge first inning, Wake Forest tacked on single runs in the second and fourth, before adding two more in the sixth to complete the 12-run effort.
The bullpen continued its strong work, as right-handers Garrett Kelly, Parker Johnson, and Aaron Fossas combined to finish the game with 3.0 innings of one-hit, shutout ball.
The Blue Devils struggled on offense, as they did not have a runner reach second base after the fourth inning.
Up next, Wake Forest will continue its three-game series against Duke on Saturday at 4 p.m. at David F. Couch Ballpark.
