WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --
The 44th-ranked Wake Forest women's tennis team recorded two wins on Saturday at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex. The Demon Deacons downed No. 39 Virginia Tech, 5-2, before defeating in-state foe Appalachian State, 7-0.

The victories upped the Deacons' record on the season to 12-2 and the defeat of the Hokies pushed their ACC ledger to 2-1. The Deacs now have a winning record in the conference for the first time since 2009 and are 4-2 against ranked opponents in 2016.

Wake Forest got off to an auspicious start against the Hokies, defeating a ranked team in the doubles competition for the first time this season. Luisa Fernandez and Andrea Retolaza Andrade got things started with a 6-2 win at No. 3 before Samantha Asch and Emma Davis secured the first point with a 6-4 triumph at the second position.

Kimmy Guerin and Anna Ulyashchenko finished off the sweep by erasing a 5-3 deficit with four-straight game wins to take No. 1 by a score of 7-5.

Singles play had an equally promising start for the Deacons, who added to their lead at No. 1 when No. 82-ranked Guerin upset No. 49 Francesca Fusinato, 6-2, 6-1. Joanna Zalewski made it 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Kelly Williford at No. 4. Both Guerin and Zalewski added wins against Appalachian State and are now 13-1 in dual match singles.

To clinch the win, Emma Davis continued her strong play at No. 2. After pulling out a 7-2 decision in a first-set tiebreaker, the Cohasset, Mass. native overcame a 4-0 deficit in the second set to win, 7-6 (2), 6-4.

Fernandez capped the hosts' scoring by sandwiching a three-set win at No. 6 between Hokie victories at Nos. 3 and 5. Caroline Daxhelet's win for Virginia Tech at No. 3 came in a match tiebreaker.

The Demon Deacons wasted little time getting on the board in their second match of the day, which began around 90 minutes after Saturday's opener against Virginia Tech.

Luisa Fernandez and Andrea Retolaza Andrade won, 6-1, at No. 3 doubles and Kasey Gardiner and Kimmy Guerin made it 1-0 with a triumph at the second spot, 6-3. Emma Davis and Samantha Asch were leading, 5-2, at No. 1 when their match was halted.

The Wake Forest roll carried over into singles, where Davis made it 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout win against Melissa Machado at No. 2. Fernandez picked up her 10th-straight singles win, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4 to make it 3-0 and Joanna Zalewski secured the team win by claiming the point at No. 3.

The win for Fernandez was the 100th of her career in singles and doubles combined, making her the 38th player in program history to accomplish the feat.

Completing the shutout were Xue Zhang at No. 5, Gardiner at No. 6 and Guerin at No. 1 in that order.
