#DeacsInMadrid: Wake Forest Men's Soccer Takes On Spain
About the trip: From March 4 through March 13, Wake Forest men's soccer will travel through Spain over spring break, getting the adventure of a lifetime while being fully immersed in the Spanish soccer scene. During its time in Spain, the Demon Deacons will have the chance to see three professional soccer games and players, including Real Madrid C.F. with Christiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and many other of the sport's greats, before going to Barcelona to see F.C. Barcelona, Lionel Messi and others. At the same time, the team will get a crash course education in Spanish history and culture while touring each city extensively. To cap it off, the Deacs will have the chance to play three matches against trialist teams from Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and UE Cornella.
#DeacsInSpain: Day 4, Tuesday March 8
Following a light start to the day on Tuesday with a stretch in Plaza de Espana, the Demon Deacons got the chance to play Real Madrid's 18s squad at Ciudad Real Madrid. Playing just a few fields down from where Real Madrid's first team trains, the Deacs earned a 3-0 victory for the second day in a row. Jon Bakero broke the ice in the 21st minute with his third goal in two days to give Wake Forest a 1-0 lead at halftime. Early in the second half, Tane Gent doubled the Deacon lead in the 53rd minute and Steven Echevarria scored Wake Forest's third goal of the afternoon five minutes later in the 58th minute.
After the game, the team went straight to Bernabeu Stadium for Champions League action between Real Madrid and Roma. After a scoreless first half, Christiano Ronaldo got the ball rolling for Real Madrid in the 64th minute and James Rodriguez scored the insurance goal four minutes later in the 68th minute to help Real Madrid advance in Champions League play past Roma.
Coming Up Next: Wednesday March 9, 2016
Wake Forest will depart Madrid on Wednesday morning for Barcelona. The Deacs should arrive just before noon and will head straight to a light training session to keep their legs loose and ready to play Thursday for the third time in four days. In the afternoon, the team will head to Sitges, Spain, to visit the home town of sophomore forward Jon Bakero. After visiting Sitges, the team will head back to Barcelona for the remainder of the trip.
