WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --
The 20th-ranked Wake Forest women's tennis team won its final home match of the 2016 regular season, defeating No. 69 Florida State, 4-3, on Sunday at the Wake Forest Complex. The Demon Deacons honored their three seniors, Kasey Gardiner, Andrea Retolaza Andrade and Xue Zhang, prior to the match.

The victory vaulted the Deacs' record on the season to 18-7 with a 7-6 mark in the ACC. The team also improved to 8-7 against ranked opponents and 11-3 at home. Wake Forest reached the seven-win mark in conference play for the first time since 2007.

The shorthanded Seminoles gained the early edge by staking claim to the doubles point. After defaulting at the No. 3 position, Florida State pulled out wins at the top two spots by scores of 7-5 and 7-6 (4), respectively, to get on the board.

Singles play began with the score knotted at one due to an injury to Florida State's Ariana Rahmanparast that gave the Demon Deacons the point at the No. 6 spot.

The Seminoles regained the lead with a win by No. 39-ranked Daneika Borthwick at the top position, but Anna Ulyashchenko answered by recovering from a second-set loss to outlast Gabriella Castaneda, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1, at No. 3.

With the match tied at two, Samantha Asch staved off rallies from Daniela Schippers in both the first and second sets to earn a 7-5, 6-4 triumph in the No. 5 slot, giving the Deacons their first lead of the afternoon.

Despite dropping her first set at No. 4, Joanna Zalewski came from behind to take down Julia Mikulski with back-to-back 6-2 set wins to clinch the match.

Zalewski's victory was her team-leading 28th of 2015-16 and was her 20th of the spring season, also a Demon Deacon-best. Additionally, the win gave the Deacs 100 singles victories as a team in dual match play on the year--they are now 100-50 on the spring.

Florida State closed out the contest with a three-set win by Yukako Noi at No. 2 to make it a 4-3 final.

Wake Forest closes out its regular season schedule next Friday at No. 37 NC State. The ACC Tournament in Cary, N.C. will be held from April 20-24.
