The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams are both in first place at the Campbell Invitational after one day of competition at the meet. The Demon Deacons also had notable finishes at the 58th-annual Mt. SAC Relays, the 2016 Bryan Clay Invitational and the Beach Invitational in California on Friday.
For the Deacon men at Campbell, Tylor Harris, Max Adams and Frank Ahearn swept the top three spots in the shot put, respectively, while Luke Annichiarico won the men's pole vault, clearing 4.60m. Harris won his event with a toss of 16.43m.
On the women's side, Sydney White led a trio of top-three Deacs in the pole vault with a 4.11m mark, while Alva Hicks used a school-record 54.66m hammer throw to take first place in her event. Hicks also broke the women's indoor weight throw record earlier in her rookie campaign. Her Friday result bested her previous collegiate personal record by 2.88m. It broke Casidy Callahan's Wake Forest record by 1.76m.
Andrea Vahoua was the runner-up in both the hammer and the shot put.
The Deacon men finished the day with 19 team points, seven more than second-place Mount Olive. The women had 34 points, creating a 14-point cushion ahead of second-place Elon.
At the Mt. SAC Relays, Kathryn Lazarchick took home the title in the women's 1,500m with a personal-record time of 4:21.53, while Alexandria Florent used a 1.70m leap to place second in the high jump.
Also in the Golden State, Jessie Merckle placed second in field of 40 in the women's javelin at Long Beach State's Beach Invitational with a throw of 52.83m. Robert Heppenstall tied for 10th in the 400m at the Bryan Clay Invitational with a time of 48.24 seconds.
The Demon Deacons conclude the Campbell Invitational and the Mt. SAC Relays on Saturday. They will send student-athletes to the Virginia Challenge and the Elon Invitational next weekend.
