GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Wake Forest women's golf team had its second consecutive round under par to secure a second place finish at the 2016 ACC Championship. The Demon Deacons shot a 1-under 287 during Sunday's play at Sedgefield Country Club to finish the tournament at 2-over, trailing champion Virginia by 11 strokes and finishing 17 strokes ahead of third place Duke.
The Demon Deacons were led by Jennifer Kupcho and Sierra Sims, who shared tournament runner-up honors at 7-under par for the championship.
"I was really proud of the effort that the students put into this week," said head coach Dianne Dailey. "We had some frustration at the Bryan and a few of the tournaments leading into this one, but it all came together for them this week. I was really excited for Jennifer and Sierra to finish second. Sierra was 11-under par over the last two rounds, which is quite an accomplishment. This gives us a lot of momentum as we head into NCAAs."
Sims posted a final round 67 as she posted the best round of the day for the second straight afternoon. It came on the heels of a second round 66 on Saturday, which tied for low round of the tournament.
Kupcho, who shot the only other 66 of the week during Friday's first round, concluded play with a final round 69 to finish at 7-under for the tournament. She entered the 18th hole tied for the individual lead, but had had a bogey while medalist Lauren Coughlin of Virginia had a birdie.
Mariana Sims had her best round of the tournament with a 75 on Sunday, finishing T-45th at 16-over for the tournament. Antonia Eberhard and Erica Herr each shot a final round 76 to finish T-19th and T-29th at 7-over and 10-over, respectively.
Wake Forest's second place finish marked the best tournament performance by the team this season and the Demon Deacons' best showing at the ACC Championship since their 2010 championship squad.
The Demon Deacons will return to action with the NCAA Regionals, held May 5-7 at four sites around the nation.
