Deacs Finish Virginia Challenge, Elon Invitational

The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up competition at the Virginia Challenge at Lannigan Field in Charlottesville, Va. and completed the Elon Invitational at Irwin Belk Track in Elon, N.C. on Saturday. The Demon Deacons posted nine top-10 finishes in an elite field in Virginia and added a pair of event wins at Elon.
In Charlottesville, Sydney White tied her own school record with a 4.20m pole vault to place third, while Alexandria Florent continued a stellar freshman season with a second-place showing in the high jump, using a 1.76m leap.
Jessie Merckle rounded out the top-five finishers for the Deacon women with a fourth-place, 53.32m javelin toss.
On the men's side, Alexander Krall spiked up to third place in the decathlon after starting the day in fifth. Tylor Harris took fourth in the shot put with a throw of 16.79m. Teammate John Maurins took eight in the shot put invitational group with a mark of 17.82m.
Seven Demon Deacons placed in the top five at the Elon Invitational, headed by a first-place, 17:29.54 time in the women's 5,000m by Mimi Smith and a men's steeplechase win by Kent Garrett, who crossed the finish line at 10:04.68.
The Demon Deacons will next compete on May 7 at the Appalachian State Invitational in Boone, N.C. That meet will be their final competition before the ACC Outdoor Championships.
