WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The No. 20 Wake Forest women's tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss at the hands of No. 7-ranked Miami on Friday afternoon at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
With the loss, the Demon Deacons fell to 17-7 on the season, including a 6-6 in mark in ACC matches. They are 7-7 on the season against ranked opponents and are 10-3 at home with all three losses coming against teams ranked 17th or higher.
A competitive doubles competition finished in the Hurricanes' favor.
At the top position, No. 9-ranked Stephanie Wagner and Wendy Zhang got a service break in the seventh game to edge the Deacons' No. 45-ranked duo of Kimmy Guerin and Anna Ulyashchenko, 6-4. Samantha Asch and Emma Davis answered almost immediately after for the Deacs with a 6-4 win of their own at No. 2, but Miami claimed the point when Clementina Riobueno and Silvia Fuentes rallied from a 4-0 deficit to win, 6-4, at No. 3.
In singles, Ulyashchenko evened the score at one with an impressive 6-2, 6-3 win against the 61st-ranked Zhang in the third spot. The triumph was the second of Ulyashchenko's rookie campaign against a ranked singles opponent.
Miami seized first-set victories on four of the remaining five singles courts, but all five went to third sets.
The No. 5-ranked Wagner gave the Hurricanes the lead back by coming from behind to defeat Guerin, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, and Clara Tanielian made it a 3-1 contest by closing out a 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 defeat of Asch at No. 5.
After falling behind with a first-set loss, Joanna Zalewski stormed back to win by a score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 to make it 3-2, but the visitors clinched the victory by winning the decisive third set at No. 2 as No. 7-ranked Sinead Lohan held off Davis.
A tight, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win by Ana Madcur at No. 5 made it a 5-2 final score for Miami.
Zalewski's victory was her team-leading 27th of 2015-16 and was her 19th triumph of the spring season, also a Demon Deacon-best.
Wake Forest will conclude its home schedule and celebrate Senior Day on Sunday at noon against No. 69 Florida State. The Deacs' regular season comes to an end next Friday at NC State.
