Deacons Set for ACC Championships

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams will open their postseasons this week at the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The meet will run Friday through Sunday at Florida State's Mike Long Track in Tallahassee, Fla.
Field events will kick off the action each day. The schedule calls for a 9:30 a.m. start on Friday, a 10 a.m. beginning on Saturday and an 11 a.m. open on Sunday. ESPN3 will provide live coverage beginning at 6 p.m. each day.
Last year at the ACC Championships, Wake Forest finished 12th on the women's side and 14th on the men's side.
For the women, Nyki Caldwell (high jump), Jessie Merckle (javelin), Samantha Jones (5,000m), Kathleen Darling (10,000m) and Emily Campbell (discus) earned All-ACC nods. John Maurins (shot put), Simon Holden (800m) and Charlie Ionata (hammer throw) were all-conference honorees for the men. Caldwell was the women's high jump champion.
The Demon Deacon men have tallied 13 events titles in the 2016 outdoor season. Among the team's regular-season highlights was Ionata breaking the school's hammer throw record with a toss of 65.15m at the season-opening Wake Forest Open.
The Wake Forest women have claimed 22 event wins thus far on the outdoor season and have made a trio of school records fall.
Senior Jessie Merckle eclipsed her own school record in the javelin throw by launching a throw of 56.91m at the High Point VertKlasse Meeting, while freshman Alva Hicks took down the Deacs' hammer throw record with a toss of 54.66m at the Campbell Invitational. Senior Sydney White, the reigning ACC Field Performer of the Week, broke her own pole vault record with a mark of 4.25m at last week's Hokie Twilight Qualifier.
Following the conference meet, round one of the NCAA Championships will be held in Jacksonville, Fla. from May 26-28.
