BROOMFIELD, Colo. -- Wake Forest freshman golfer Jennifer Kupcho qualified for the 2016 U.S. Women's Open after winning the Colorado sectional qualifying event this week at Heritage Golf Course at Westmoor. She will compete in her first U.S. Women's Open in July as the event is held at CordeValle in San Martin, Calif.
Kupcho shot rounds of 77 and 72 over the 36-hole qualifying tournament to earn medalist honors with a total of 149. Her even-par round of 72 was the best round of the day by two strokes.
Kupcho will be one of two current Demon Deacons in the field at the U.S. Women's Open. Incoming freshman Sierra Brooks earned an exemption by being the runner-up at the 2015 U.S. Women's Amateur.
Also qualifying this week for the U.S. Women's Open was Wake Forest alumna Nannette Hill. The 2009 graduate was the runner-up at the sectional qualifying tournament in Pennsylvania.
Two other current Demon Deacons, Sierra Sims and Erica Herr, also participated in sectional qualifying, but did not advance.
Kupcho will conclude her freshman season later this week as an individual competitor at the NCAA Championship. The tournament will run June 20-23 in Eugene, Ore.
