EUGENE, Ore. -- Wake Forest freshman golfer Jennifer Kupcho had a strong start to the NCAA Women's Golf Championship, shooting a 3-under 69 during first round play at the Eugene Country Club. Kupcho is T-3rd after the first 18 holes of the tournament and is one shot off the lead.
Kupcho is one of eight players tied for third, one stroke behind co-leaders August Kim of Purdie and Haley Moore of Arizona.
"Jennifer played steady, consistent golf, missing only three greens," said head coach Dianne Dailey. "She was awesome on the Par 3s, birdieing three of the four. It was a near perfect round of golf. She played with a lot of confidence and managed the difficult course very well."
Kupcho played the front nine in even par, carding one birdie and one bogey. After a bogey on No. 10 took her to 1-over for the round, she birdied four of the final seven holes to complete her round at 3-under.
"The course was great," said Kupcho. "I had a lot of fun having (associate head coach) Kevin (Diaz) walk with me and keep me calm through the round. I just kept fighting and it eventually paid off on the back nine."
The NCAA Championship continues with the second round on Saturday. After Sunday's third round, the field will be cut for Monday's final round.
