TULSA, Okla. -- Skander Mansouri and Petros Chrysochos of the Wake Forest men's tennis team advanced to the round of 32 of the NCAA Men's Division I Tennis Singles Tournament with first-round wins on Wednesday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
Mansouri defeated No. 18-ranked Arthur Rinderknech of Texas A&M, 1-6, 6-4, 3-0 (retire), and Chrysochos grinded out a 7-6 (9), 7-6 (4) victory against 12th-ranked Julian Lenz of Baylor.
Play will continue for the Deacs on Thursday. Chrysochos will take on No. 53 Alfredo Perez of Florida at 10 a.m. ET in the second round, while Mansouri will face No. 24 Alex Rybakov of TCU at 11:30 a.m. ET. Mansouri will also pair with Christian Seraphim to play Giammarco Micolani and Mike Redlicki of Arkansas in the first round of the doubles draw at 3:30 p.m.
After dropping his first set by a score of 6-1, Mansouri used a service break in the second set to take a 5-4 lead en route to a 6-4 win. In the third set, the Tunis, Tunisia native earned a pair of breaks to take a 3-0 lead before Rinderknech defaulted.
In his first set, Chrysochos built a 5-3 lead, but Lenz won three games in a row to gain a 6-5 edge. The Deacon rookie held in the 12th game to force a tiebreaker and negated 3-0, 5-3 and 7-6 deficits to pull out an 11-9 win.
Lenz erased a 3-1 deficit and went on to serve with a 6-5 lead in the second set, but Chrysochos erased a 40-15 deficit to force another tiebreaker. In the breaker, Chrysochos jumped out to a 5-1 lead and held off a late rally by the three-time All-American for a 7-4 triumph.
In 2015-16, Mansouri is now 16-9 against ranked singles foes, while Chrysochos is 11-1.
This marks the second year in a row and the second time in program history that two Demon Deacons have reached the second round of the NCAA Singles Tournament. Last season, Noah Rubin and Romain Bogaerts both won in the first round. Rubin reached the tournament's championship match.
