EUGENE, Ore. – Wake Forest men's track and field freshman Robert Heppenstall finished eighth in the men's 800m national final at the NCAA Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. on Friday night.
Heppenstall, who qualified for the championship by placing second in his semifinal heat on Wednesday with a time of 1:47.56, ended a breakout rookie campaign with a time of 1:51.14. Texas A&M freshman Donavan Brazier won the title with a collegiate record time of 1:43.55.
The appearance in the national 800m final was the second by a Demon Deacon. Warren Sherman placed sixth in the event in his senior year in 1995. That meet took place in Knoxville, Tenn.
The ACC Indoor and Outdoor 800m champion in 2016, Heppenstall earned First Team All-American status by finishing in the top eight in the country. He and Sherman are the only two Deacon All-Americans in the event.
The Hamilton, Ontario native was also the ACC Indoor Track Freshman of the Year and came in fifth in the NCAA Indoor final in March to garner his first-career All-America nod. In addition, Heppenstall set the school indoor 800m record with a 1:47.35 at the ACC Championships. That mark set the conference meet and Canadian Junior records, as well.
The race was the final Wake Forest athletics event of the 2015-16 season. Heppenstall was one of two Demon Deacon track and field All-Americans in 2016. He joined Jessie Merckle, who earned second team honors by placing 10th in the NCAA women's javelin throw on Thursday.
