Deacs Drop Season Opener to Iowa, 2-1

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The seventh-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team fell to Iowa 2-1 in the regular season opener on Saturday at Kentner Stadium as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Iowa (1-0) took the lead early with a goal from Natalie Cafone, scored off a corner, just seven minutes into the first half. Three minutes later, the Deacs (0-1) nearly tied the score as Nicola Pluta hit the post. The Hawkeyes doubled their lead with 15 minutes to play in the first half as Chandler Ackers scored off of a corner. Iowa took their 2-0 lead into halftime.

Wake Forest came out strong in the second half. Jule Grashoff scored her first goal of the season to cut Iowa's lead, 2-1. The Deacs continued the pressure on Iowa through the final seconds of the game but could not find the equalizer.

Iowa out-shot the Deacs 9-8 while each team recorded four corners. Grashoff recorded four shots, two on goal, to lead the Deacs offensively. Cat O'Connor made one save in goal for the Demon Deacons.

Wake Forest returns to action in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge Sunday against Michigan. The game begins at 11:30 a.m.
