WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Seventh-ranked Wake Forest beat Michigan 2-0 on Sunday at Kentner Stadium in their final game of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Jule Grashoff and Emily Conroe each recorded goals a minute a part in the second half to lift the Deacs to victory.
The Deacs (1-1) also beat Michigan (1-1) in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge last season but were later knocked out of the first round of the NCAA tournament by the Wolverines, who yesterday upset top-ranked North Carolina in their season opener.
The Deacs owned the better possession throughout the first half, despite being out-shot, 4-3. Jule Grashoff recorded two shots, both on goal, for Wake Forest in the first while Cat O'Connor managed a save. Both teams had opportunities with two corners each but entered halftime scoreless.
The second half was all Wake Forest as Grashoff and Conroe each scored. Grashoff got the Demon Deacons on the scoreboard in the 56th minute with an unassisted shot after dribbling through a tight Michigan defense to make the score 1-0. Conroe quickly followed in the 57th minute with a tap-in goal assisted by Nicola Pluta. Cat O'Connor made two saves to record the shutout.
Wake Forest will continue play Friday, Sept. 2 with a trip to Columbus, Ohio to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes at 3:30pm.
