Wake Forest Drops ACC Opener to Duke, 3-1

DURHAM, N.C. -- Wake Forest dropped their conference opener to Duke, 3-1, on Wednesday at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Wake Forest (4-8, 0-1 ACC) and Duke (7-4, 1-0 ACC) kept the beginning of the match tight, with neither team leading by more than three. But the Blue Devils went for a 5-0 run to gain a 15-9 lead and would not look back as they finished the first set, 25-15.
The Deacs looked more collected in the second set, taking their first lead of the match, 6-5. Kylie Long had four kills and no errors while the Deacs recorded only one attack error on 17 kills in the set. Wake Forest swung a .593 attack percentage while the Blue Devils recorded five errors on 12 kills for a .226 average. The Deacs took the second set, 25-19.
After the break, Duke came out hot, jumping to a 6-0 lead. The Blue Devils kept the Deacs at arm's-length, holding them to a .048 attack percentage, to ultimately take the set, 25-19.
Entering the fourth set down 2-1, the Deacs came out strong but couldn't outlast a steady Blue Devil squad. The Deacs recorded seven errors in the set and a .050 attack percentage giving the Blue Devils the fourth set 25-21, and the match, 3-1.
Despite the loss, freshman Caroline Rassenfoss recorded a career-high 20 kills in the four-set match while swinging a .179 attack percentage. The Demon Deacons recorded a collective 49 kills.
The Demon Deacons continue play on the road Sept. 23 at Virginia. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. and can be viewed on WatchESPN/ACC Network Extra.
