CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Wake Forest volleyball defeated Virginia, 3-1, on Friday at Memorial Gym in Charlottesville, Virginia.
The win was the first ACC victory for first-year head coach Bill Ferguson while the Demon Deacons are now 1-1 in conference play.
Wake Forest (5-8) looked uncomfortable in their first set, recording only 10 kills and a .111 attack percentage while Virginia (3-10) posted a .229 average with 13 kills. The Cavaliers easily took the set, 25-20.
However, the rest of the match proved to be the opposite of the first set. The Deacons gained their composure in the second set while both teams fought hard for every point. The Deacs recorded 18 kills, seven of which came from Kylie Long. Long would go on to record a total of 15 kills on the night. The set contained 10 tied scores and three lead changes, with no team leading by more than three, but Wake Forest ultimately took the set, 25-23.
Tied 1-1 going into the third set, the Deacs caught fire. Caroline Rassenfoss recorded nine of her 26 total kills in the third set, swinging a .600 attack percentage, but the Cavs would not back down. Once again the set proved volatile, containing 10 tied scores and six lead changes. An extra point was required to settle the duel, with the Deacs sealing the third set, 26-24.
The fourth, and final, set was all Wake Forest. Caroline Rassenfoss recorded 10 of the Deacs' 15 kills in the set to lead the Demon Deacons to a 25-19 set victory and a 3-1 match win.
Caroline Rassenfoss had a stellar showing, recording a career-high 26 kills and a .523 attack percentage. She also recorded three solo blocks and one block assist to round-out her stellar performance, where she recorded 29.5 of the 74 total points for the Demon Deacons.
The Demon Deacons continue their conference roadtrip on Friday, Sept. 30th at Louisville. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
