SOKOBANJA, Serbia -- Incoming freshman Alex Lazarov claimed the Serbia F8 Futures title on Sunday with his fifth straight victory at the event.
Slated to join the Deacons for the spring semester in January, Lazarov was ranked No. 927 heading into the tournament.
Against No. 615-ranked and sixth-seeded Filip Veger in the final, the first two sets went back and forth. Lazarov dropped the first, 6-7 (2), before taking the second, 7-6 (4). The future Deacon jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third set before Veger retired.
Lazarov, a Bulgaria native, also knocked off top-seeded Mate Delic in the second round, dispatching the No. 451-ranked player in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
Lazarov also claimed wins over Darko Jandric (6-1, 6-4) in the first round, Davide Galoppini (1-6, 7-6 (6), 6-2) in the quarterfinal and Mike Urbanija (6-1, 3-6, 6-4) in the semifinal.
The win is his first-career singles title. He improves to 19-9 in the ATP/WTA and ITF Pro Circuit main draw this year.
