WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - John Collins recorded a career-high 27 points in Wake Forest's 96-79 victory over the Miami Hurricanes Wednesday night at the LJVM Coliseum. The 96 points by the Demon Deacons were the most allowed by the Hurricanes this season, as Miami entered the contest with one of the top 10 defenses in the nation.
Collins went 9-for-11 from the field and a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line on his way to the career high.
Keyshawn Woods also finished in double figures with an ACC-career high 20 points. Bryant Crawford and Mitchell Wilbekin totaled 14 and 10 points, respectively, to round out the double-digit scoring.
The Demon Deacons (11-7, 2-4 ACC) recorded their fifth 50-40-75 game of this season after shooting 58 percent from the field, 47 percent from behind the arc and 82 percent from the free throw line.
The Deacs got off to a hot, 7-0 start and held the Hurricanes (12-5, 2-3 ACC) scoreless until Ja'Quan Newton split a pair of free throws at the 15:57 mark. The Deacs continued to go on a 14-2 run over the course of four minutes to build their advantage to 17 with 9:45 remaining in the half. The Deacs shot 53 percent from the field while limiting the Canes to 36 percent and eventually found themselves up by 18 with 5:21 remaining. Wake Forest surrendered a 6-0 run towards the end of the half but entered the locker room with a 48-34 advantage.
Just like the first half, the Deacs opened the second half on a 7-0 run and forced the Canes to take a time out with 18:24 remaining on the clock. Wake Forest built its lead to 23 before Miami's Davon Reed found the basket on a triple with 16:46 left in the contest. Miami went on a 6-0 run to bring the game within 11 with 12:44 remaining, forcing Wake Forest to take a time out. After the break, the Demon Deacons scored nine points in less than two minutes to bring the lead back to 18. The Canes continued to fight, bringing the score within six with just under four minutes to go. However, the Deacs sealed the game at the free throw line, going 6-for-6 in the final four minutes, to take the 96-79 victory.
Doral Moore matched a season-high with six points before fouling out late in the second half.
The Demon Deacons begin a two-game road trip Saturday, Jan. 21 with a visit to NC State. Tip-off is set at 2 p.m.
DOUBLE-DIGIT DEACS
John Collins, Keyshawn Woods, Bryant Crawford, and Mitchell Wilbekin all scored in double digits tonight with 27, 20, 14, and 10 points respectively.
Collins recorded the 5th game of his career scoring 20 or more points. Ending tonight with 27 points, a new career high. All five games have been this season.
The 20 points from Woods are a new ACC-career high.
MOVING UP THE RECORD BOOKS
With the two 3-pointers made by Wilbekin tonight, he is now tied for 10th in career 3-pointers made with 127. Wilbekin shares this spot with Steven Goolsby (1995-98).
Crawford ended the night with 8 assists making his career total 240. Crawford has moved up to the 22nd spot in career assists. Crawford shares this spot with Josh Howard (2000-03).
FROM THE CHARITY STRIPE
Wake Forest continues their efficient shooting from the free-throw line tonight making 27-33 (81.8%). The Deacs make tonight their 7th game of the season shooting 80% and above from the free-throw line.
