
Wake Forest Upended by Florida State

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team fell, 3-1, to Florida State on Friday night at LJVM Coliseum.
After the Seminoles (10-5, 4-3 ACC) battled to take the first two sets, the Demon Deacons (10-9, 2-5 ACC) answered back with a convincing, 25-17, third-set victory. However, Florida State reestablished control in the fourth, cruising to a 25-14 win to claim the match at 3-1.
The Deacs were led by senior Kylie Long, who paced the team with 17 kills. Long also tallied 12 digs for her team-leading fourth double-double of the season. In addition, Long totaled a career-high three solo blocks for the match. Caitlyn Della played a solid all-around match. The sophomore middle blocker finished with 11 kills and a team-best .280 hitting percentage. She also led the Demon Deacons with five block assists.
The first set was closely contested until the very end, as the Seminoles prevailed, 25-23, after the Deacs fought off one set point. Long delivered six kills in the set.
Florida State jumped out to a quick lead in the second set and never trailed on its way to a 25-20 win to go up, 2-0, in the match. Although the Seminoles held a 21-10 lead at one point in the set, Wake Forest won seven of the next eight points to close the gap to 22-17. However, the team's deficit was too large as Florida State hit .323 in the set, compared to .147 for the Deacs.
After the Demon Deacons fell behind, 5-2, early in the third, the team rallied to win seven straight points to take the lead in the set and never look back. Included in the run for the Deacs were three consecutive solo blocks, with two by Long and one by Della. Wake Forest hit .306 for the set and held the Seminoles to a .000 hitting percentage to send the match to a fourth set.
Florida State quickly recovered in the fourth, never trailing on its way to a 25-14 win to clinch the match. While the Demon Deacons cut their deficit to 11-8, the Seminoles answered by taking the next nine points to earn the convincing, 25-14, fourth-set victory.
Both teams totaled 53 kills for the match, but Florida State hit .236 while the Deacs managed .172. The Seminoles also benefitted from seven Demon Deacon service errors.
