RICHMOND, Va. - Amber Campbell's layup with 16 seconds left led Wake Forest past Richmond, 85-81, on Wednesday night at the Robins Center.
Freshman Gina Conti played her best game as a Deac, coming off the bench to tie for the team lead with 19 points, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Sophomore Alex Sharp nearly had a triple-double, contributing 14 points to go along with nine rebounds and a career-high eight assists.
Campbell added her first career double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing a career-best 10 rebounds.
After the Demon Deacons (2-1) built a game-high thirteen-point through the first three quarters, Richmond (2-1) climbed back into the game with a late 8-0 run in the fourth. However, Campbell's layup untied the game and gave Wake Forest a win in its first road test of the season.
Both offenses were hot to open the game, with Richmond and Wake Forest both making 10 first-quarter field goals. The Spiders took a four-point lead into the second period thanks to a 7-0 run to end the quarter.
In the second quarter, Wake Forest kept up its high-scoring pace while tightening its defense to take a 48-43 lead into halftime. The Demon Deacons were 5-of-10 from three-point range in the first half. Campbell and Sharp led the team with 13 points each in the first 20 minutes.
With a 51-48 lead early in the third, the Deacs used an 11-0 run to extend its lead to double-digits. Conti led the team with eight points in the quarter and Wake Forest took a 10-point lead into the fourth.
The Spiders ended the third and opened the fourth with a 12-1 run to cut Wake Forest's lead to 75-73. After the Deacs pushed the advantage to eight with four minutes left, Richmond answered with an 8-0 run to tie the game at 81-all with 2:23 remaining.
With under a minute left, Campbell drove right and finished the layup to give Wake Forest a two-point lead with 16 seconds left. Richmond's three-pointer on the next possession missed and Ariel Stephenson was fouled after the rebound. Although she missed both free throws, Destini Walker grabbed the offensive rebound and knocked down the pair from the charity stripe to seal the game.
Wake Forest ended the game shooting 45 percent from the field. The Demon Deacons dominated the glass, winning the rebounding battle, 55-32.
Up next, the Deacs continue their long road stretch with a trip to New Jersey to take on Rutgers this Sunday, Nov. 19 at 6 p.m.
