
Wake Forest Cruises Past App State

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team used a big second-quarter run to race past App State, 78-49, on Thursday night at LJVM Coliseum.
After the Mountaineers (1-8) held a 19-17 lead early in the second quarter, the Demon Deacons (5-5) went on a 16-0 run to take a double-digit lead into halftime. In the second half, the Deacs continued to extend their lead and shut down App State's offense for a season-best 29-point victory.
Tyra Whitehead led Wake Forest with 18 points and tied her career high with 12 rebounds in her second career double-double.
Making her program-record 108th career start, Amber Campbell played an outstanding overall game, scoring 13 points to go along with eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.
As a team, Wake Forest recorded 12 blocks, which ties the program record set on Jan. 20, 2014 against Clemson. The Deacs also owned the glass, outrebounding App State, 52-24. The team's plus 28 rebounding advantage was its largest of the season.
The first quarter was closely contested with App State leading most of the way. The Demon Deacons ended the quarter on a 5-0 run, all five of which were scored by Ona Udoh.
After the Mountaineers scored the first four points of the second quarter and took a 19-17 lead, Wake Forest scored 16-straight points run to take a 39-24 lead into halftime. Overall, the Deacs held a 27-12 rebounding edge in the first half.
Wake Forest continued to extend its lead throughout the third quarter, taking a 53-34 lead into the final 10 minutes.
In the final period, the Deacs kept up the defensive pressure, outscoring the Mountaineers, 25-15, to claim their largest margin of victory this season.
