Wake Forest officially opens the 2026-27 season on Monday, Nov. 2 against USC Upstate.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – A strong all-around team performance led the Wake Forest women's basketball team to a dominant 78-50 exhibition game victory over UNCG Sunday evening inside LJVM Coliseum.
Wake Forest snatched 11 steals and scored 25 points off 21 UNCG turnovers. The Demon Deacons limited the Spartans to a 30.5 field goal percentage and 11.8 percent showing from 3-point range in the strong defensive effort.
Four Demon Deacons finished in double figures, led by sophomore guard Grace Galbavy's game-high 16 points. Freshman guard Adora Nwude followed with 11 points, while junior guard Aurora Sørbye and graduate guard Breauna Ware chipped in 10 points apiece. Senior forward Mary Carter hauled in a team-best nine rebounds and freshman guard Oshauna Holland dished a squad-high five assists.
As a team, Wake Forest shot 20-for-27 from the free-throw line (74.1 free throw percentage) and had a strong advantage in paint points (46-28). Also, the Deacs produced 46 bench points in comparison to the Spartans' six.
How it Happened
From Coach Gebbia
"I thought it was a good, convincing win and team effort. We did several things well – sharing the ball, limiting turnovers and playing in transition. I was also pleased with how well we shot from the free-throw line. We had good balance with multiple people finishing in double-digit points, along with getting paint points. Now, we're on to the real games. We need to continue to stay focused for 40 minutes and have the same approach every game."

How it Happened
- A pair of Opal Bird free throws opened the scoring for the Demon Deacons. Back-to-back layups from Adora Nwude and Mary Carter followed to give Wake Forest an early 6-3 edge three minutes into the game.
- The Deacs were ahead 10-5 at the 4:34 mark of the first quarter before UNCG cut the lead to one at 10-9 less than a minute later. Wake Forest answered with five-straight points to take a six-point lead at 15-9. Wake Forest finished the opening quarter with nine of its 17 points coming from the charity stripe as the Deacs owned a 17-13 advantage following the opening 10 minutes of play.
- Grace Galbavy drilled back-to-back triples shortly into the second quarter to force a UNCG timeout at the 6:46 mark and give the Deacs a 23-15 lead.
- Those 3-pointers would serve as the front end of a stellar 17-0 Wake Forest run that saw eight total points from Galbavy and six from Helena Danielewicz as the Demon Deacons surged ahead 34-15 with 3:47 left in the second quarter. The Spartans chipped a few points off the Wake Forest lead in the closing minutes of the first half, but Wake Forest outscored UNCG 21-11 in the second stanza and carried a 38-24 lead into halftime.
- Powered by seven points from Nwude and a 10-0 run over a two-minute stretch, the Deacs were able to extend their lead to 23 six minutes into the second half. The Wake Forest lead wouldn't dip smaller than 21 for the remainder of the third quarter as the Deacs cruised into the fourth term with a 60-38 advantage.
- Aurora Sørbye scored four points of an 8-0 streak from 9:16 to 6:19 of the final quarter as the Wake Forest lead ballooned to 28 at 68-40. UNCG wouldn't get closer than 24 the rest of the way as the Deacs closed out the 78-50 exhibition game win.
