WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team won their fourth game in a row, racing past Maryland Eastern Shore, 92-50, on Saturday evening at LJVM Coliseum.
The win marked the 100th of head coach Jen Hoover's career.
After the Hawks (1-7) scored the first four points of the game, Wake Forest (6-5) quickly took the lead midway through the first quarter and never trailed again, extending its lead throughout the contest and winning by 40 or more points for the first time since the 2011-12 season.
Once again, Amber Campbell played an outstanding overall game. The senior guard finished with 16 points to tie for the team lead and go along with a career-high six steals. Campbell finished one shy of her career high with three blocks.
Elisa Penna added 16 points as well while Tyra Whitehead scored 12 points, reaching double figures for the second-straight game. Sophomore Alex Sharp finished with 10 points on 5-of-5 from the field.
The Deacs also enjoyed solid contribution from their freshman. Ivana Raca delivered eight points to go with five rebounds and two assists. Point guard Gina Conti added a season-best nine assists.
The Hawks jumped out to an early lead, but Ariel Stephenson's jumper with 5:26 left in the first gave the Deacs their first lead. Wake Forest shot 50 percent from the floor in the first quarter and took a 20-14 lead into the second.
The Demon Deacons opened the second quarter on a 15-4 run to take a 35-19 lead into the media timeout. However, the Hawks kept their deficit at just 14 points heading into halftime.
Wake Forest scored the first eight points of the third quarter to push its lead over 20 points and force a Maryland Eastern Shore timeout. The Deacs led by a game-high 31 points after three quarters as Campbell recorded all three of her blocks in the final minutes of the period.
The fourth quarter was more of the same as the Deacs eventually extended their lead to over 40 points on a Raegyn Branch three-pointer. Conti's jumper with under a minute remaining ensured Wake Forest its first 40-point win since a 46- point victory on Nov. 23, 2011 against Mercer.
Up next, the Deacs will break for exams before taking on Charlotte on Dec. 18 at 11 a.m. on School Day at LJVM Coliseum.
