MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Wake Forest men's golf team captured its second victory of the season Sunday as the final round of the General Hackler Championship was cancelled due to rain and sleet. The Demon Deacons shot 15-under over the first 36 holes at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club on Saturday to post a 10-shot win in the weather-shortened event.
Will Zalatoris captured his third career victory, first this season, by shooting 9-under during Saturday's first two rounds. He had a first round 68 before shooting a second round 67. Paul McBride was also in the individual top five, shooting 7-under. He had a first round 67 and a second round 70.
"We knew going into yesterday's first round that there was a possibility of a 36-hole event," said head coach Jerry Haas. "The team came out ready to play. They had great preparation as many of them spent their spring break in Winston just practicing. This core group of juniors and sophomores have brought us close to 10 team and individual victories over the past two seasons. The quality of play, leadership and team unity are things I really cherish. I feel like if we had to have played today we still would have brought the title home."
The Deacs will return to action Mar. 19-21with the Valspar Collegiate Invitational in Palm City, Fla.
