WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest men's tennis team cruised through action Tuesday afternoon, as the top-ranked Demon Deacons swept Virginia Tech, 7-0, at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
Playing outside at home for the first time this spring, the top-ranked doubles team of Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim opened doubles play with a 6-4 victory in the No. 1 slot. After Petros Chrysochos and Dennis Uspensky fell on court 3, all eyes were on the second court as the doubles point came down to the wire. In the end, Borna Gojo and Alan Gadjiev held off the duo of Harper/Ribiero, 7-5, to give Wake Forest (15-1, 3-0 ACC) a 1-0 lead over the Hokies (6-8, 1-3 ACC) heading into singles play.
Out of the gates, the Demon Deacons set the tone in singles competition by taking five of six first sets. Seraphim pushed the lead to 2-0 as he walked off court 4 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. Uspensky was a straight-sets winner on court 5, putting the Deacs one point from clinching the match with a 6-3, 6-4 victory. The match was clinched down on court 6 as Gadjiev took the first set 6-3, before outlasting Jason Kros in a second-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-5).
With the match in hand, Gojo who moved up to No. 57 in the country earlier in the day, was pushed to a tiebreaker in the first set before cruising in the second set, ultimately walking away with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 victory. Mansouri battled at the No. 2 position, as Alexandre Ribiero pushed both sets into tiebreakers. The Tunisia native claimed the first tiebreaker by a 7-5 margin before closing out the second tiebreaker 7-3.
Chrysochos was taken to the limit at No. 1 singles, as No. 82 Jai Corbett claimed the first set, 7-5. The second-ranked Chrysochos battled back, sending the match to a decisive third set with a 6-4 victory in the second. With the match clinched, the duo played a 10-point tiebreaker to determine the outcome, with Chrysochos walking away victorious, 10-7.
