CLEMSON, S.C. – The Wake Forest men's tennis team pushed its winning streak to eight in a row Friday evening, as the top-ranked Demon Deacons cruised past Clemson with a 6-1 victory at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.
Out of the gate, it looked like the Demon Deacons (16-1, 4-0 ACC) would be in for a battle from the Tigers (8-7, 1-3 ACC), with the doubles point coming down to a pair of tiebreakers. Borna Gojo and Alan Gadjiev took to the No. 2 doubles spot and walked away with a 6-3 victory. Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim were pushed to a tiebreaker on the top doubles court, and eventually fell 7-5 in the tiebreaker to turn the attention to court 3. Petros Chrysochos and Dennis Uspensky outlasted their opponents in their tiebreaker, 8-6, to give the Deacs a 1-0 lead into singles play.
After its slow start in doubles play, the Deacs kicked into high gear with first-set victories on five of the six singles court. Uspenky, who moved up to the No. 4 singles court Friday night, extended the Demon Deacons' lead to 2-0 with an efficient 6-1, 6-2 victory over Sam Edwards. Wake Forest clinched with a pair of matches going final within minutes of each other. First, Mansouri claimed a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Robert Dudley to push Wake Forest to within a point of clinching on Court 3. Chrysochos closed out the match in favor of the Deacs with a 6-3, 6-3 decision on the top court.
With the match in hand, play continued on courts 2, 5 and 6. Seraphim pushed the Demon Deacon advantage to 5-0 with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Carlos Kelaidis on court 5. After the Tigers picked up their first victory of the night with Gadjiev falling on court 6, Gojo closed out the match on court 2. The freshman took the first set, 6-3, before being pushed to a tiebreaker in the second set, which he ultimately dropped, 7-4. In the 10-point tiebreaker to determine the match, Gojo prevailed, 10-6, as Wake Forest claimed a 6-1 decision.
The Demon Deacons are back in action on Sunday, March 26, as the team heads to Atlanta to take on No. 17 Georgia Tech. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
