Deacs Split a Pair of Dual Matches

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --The No. 31 Wake Forest women's tennis team split a pair of dual matches against No. 34 NC State and ECU at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex. After losing the afternoon session 5-2 to NC State, the Demon Deacons rallied to a 6-1 victory against ECU. Helping the Deacs out by going undefeated on the day was Courtney Meredith and Alexis Franco in doubles while Meredith and Kimmy Guerin never lost in singles.
No. 31 Wake Forest 2, No. 34 NC State 5
The Deacs (13-5, 3-3 ACC) fell to the Wolfpack (13-7, 2-5 ACC) to start the day of match play. To begin the day, Wake Forest clinched the doubles point with wins on courts No. 2 and No. 3. Playing No. 1 doubles, Guerin and Anna Ulyashchenko fell 6-3 to the No. 21 doubles team of the Wolfpack. Meredith and Franco tied the doubles score as they earned a 6-4 victory on court No. 3. Emma Davis and Chandler Carter clinched the doubles point by defeating their opponents 6-2 on court No. 2.
Wake Forest went into singles play with the momentum before NC State rallied from behind. Ulyashchenko was first to finish a singles match as she was bested 6-2, 6-2 on the third court. Playing No. 1 singles, No. 62 Guerin defeated No. 55 Martina Frantova 6-2, 7-5 to put the Deacs ahead. On court No. 5, Carter came up short in the first set tiebreaker 7-3 before she fell 6-0 in the second set. Joanna Zalewski played on the fourth singles court, but was topped by her opponent 6-0, 7-5. On court No. 6, Luisa Fernandez found herself in the deciding match. Despite her efforts to keep the Deacs alive, Fernandez was defeated 6-4, 6-2. After losing the first set 6-2, No. 110 Davis rallied to a 7-6 (4) victory in the second set to force a 10 point-tiebreaker to determine the third set. Davis was ultimately topped 10-8 as NC State went on to win 5-2.

The Demon Deacons turned the momentum back in their favor in the evening match against ECU. Meredith and Franco went undefeated on the No. 3 doubles court today thanks to a 6-2 win. Guerin and Ulyashchenko rebounded from earlier in the day to win their doubles match 6-3 on court No. 1. As Wake Forest clinched the doubles point, Davis/Carter were up 5-4 on court No. 2.
The Deacs carried their doubles momentum into singles play. First to finish was Meredith as cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory on court No. 6. Shortly after, Davis earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory on the second court to put the Deacs one win away from clinching the match. On court No. 4, Carter fell 6-1 in the first set but came up short in the second set 6-4. Guerin earned a comfortable 6-2, 6-1 victory on court No. 1 to clinch the match for the Deacs.
Playing third singles, Ulyashchenko rebounded from earlier this morning and defeated her opponent 6-3, 6-2. On court No. 5, Fernandez finished the day off with a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
The Demon Deacons return to action on Friday, March 31 as they head to Charlottesville, Va. to take on the Cavaliers.
